Franklin J. Star, M.D., F.A.C.S.


Dr. Star was the founding member of Surgical Associates of Columbus. He opened his practice in September 1965. Surgical Associates of Columbus was incorporated in 1971 and added a second surgeon in 1972. Dr. Star provided direction for the flourishing practice until his retirement in 2002, and the practice continues to grow in it's now fifth decade of providing quality surgical care to the greater Columbus area.

Dr. Star attended the University of Chicago and received his BA and later BS degrees in anatomy. He then continued at the University of Chicago, School of Medicine and graduated with his MD in 1958. Dr. Star completed a rotating internship at King County Hospital in Seattle, Washington and then moved on to his general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee, City of Memphis Hospitals program. Dr. Star then served in the United States Army Medical Corp for two years before settling in Columbus where he established his private practice in general surgery and founded Surgical Associates of Columbus.

Dr. Star was certified by the American Board of Surgery. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was a member of numerous medical/surgical societies. He was on the senior active medical staff at The Medical Center and was on the Emeritus/Courtesy staff at St. Francis and Doctor's hospitals respectively. He has held numerous medical staff leadership positions including Chief of Staff at The Medical Center. He was the American College of Surgeons Liaison Surgeon to the John B. Amos Community Cancer Center. He was also an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia.

Dr. Star had a special interest in the surgical treatment of breast diseases including breast cancer.
